“Today, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to continue to saddle millions of Americans under the heavy burden of student loan debt and with the broken student loan system,” said Arnold Sowell, Jr., Executive Director at NextGen Policy. “By striking down President Biden’s federal student debt cancellation plan, the Supreme Court threatens the economic security of millions of students who took out loans for the chance to receive a higher education promise but instead will now see their financial well being continue to deteriorate. The burden of student loan debt disproportionately hurts low-income borrowers of color who carry the bulk of the student debt load. We condemn the Supreme Court’s decision today and urge President Biden to find an alternative pathway for student debt cancellation. We stand ready to assist in any way we can as borrowers seek to navigate the tumultuous road ahead.”
